Munich Photographers in Exile
As part of this year’s series on photography, the exhibition “Unexposed: Munich Photographers in Exile” looks at the lives and work of three photographers, largely unknown in Germany, who emigrated to Palestine in the 1930s: Alfons Himmelreich (1904–1993), Efrem Ilani (1910–1999), and Jakob Rosner (1902–1950). They are among those photographers who captured the country of Israel as a British mandate and the emergence of the State of Israel from 1948 onward with their cameras and considerably molded the historical picture of Israel in the collective memory.

Dieser Katalog behandelt, neben einem erstmals erstellten bio-bibliografischen Lexikon aller jüdischen Fotografen, die in München gelebt und gewirkt haben, die Arbeiten von drei Fotografen: Alfons Himmelreich, Efrem Ilani und Jakob Rosner. Sie alle emigrierten in den 1930er-Jahren ins damalige Palästina und dokumentierten in den Folgejahrzehnten mit ihren Fotoarbeiten den spannungsvollen Aufbau des Landes. Sie zeigen seine stetige Weiterentwicklung aus der Perspektive des Einwanderers. Palästina /Israel wird als pulsierende Lebensort dargestellt, als ein Land, dessen Alltag stark von Arbeit geprägt ist und sich in den Dokumentar- und Industrieaufnahmen der drei Fotografen widerspiegelt. Die Publikation Unbelichtet. Münchner Fotografen im Exil erscheint anlässlich der gleichnamigen Ausstellung des Jüdischen Museums München von Februar bis Mai 2010.
