Luisenstrasse 33: Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus

The Municipal Gallery, originally opened in 1924, was completely burned out in World War II. Reconstruction work proceeded slowly. All cultural events and all permits for exhibitions, as well as staffing issues at this time had to be approved by the American military authorities. The gallery’s first exhibition in 1947 was with artists of the “Neue Gruppe,” the “Münchner Künstlergenossenschaft” and the “Münchner Sezession,” all under the auspices of the Munich City Council. Two exhibitions, almost forgotten today, of works by DPs were also held on Königsplatz in 1948, on the fringe of the area of the Nazi Party’s former seat of power, namely the presentation of the works by students from the ORT technical school and the “Exhibition of Jewish Artists.”
