The Jewish World and the Wittelsbach Dynasty

“The Jewish World and the Wittelsbach Dynasty” looks at the early history of collecting Judaica, which was always also a history of appropriation and disappropriation. The exhibition takes a look inside Munich’s cabinet of curiosities during the Renaissance and presents several exceptional Hebrew manuscripts from the former court library. Objects in the holdings of the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum reflect a brief period of collaboration, when around 1880 Jews in Munich endeavored to build up a collection of Jewish religious objects together with custodians of the museum.
