The Jewish World and the Wittelsbach Dynasty
“The Jewish World and the Wittelsbach Dynasty” looks at the early history of collecting Judaica, which was always also a history of appropriation and disappropriation.
The exhibition takes a look inside Munich’s cabinet of curiosities during the Renaissance and presents several exceptional Hebrew manuscripts from the former court library. Objects in the holdings of the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum reflect a brief period of collaboration, when around 1880 Jews in Munich endeavored to build up a collection of Jewish religious objects together with custodians of the museum.

Der Katalog zur Ausstellung
Die erste Ausstellung des Jahresthemas Sammelbilder widmet sich der Geschichte des Sammelns von Jüdischem in München. Sie stellt Fragen nach der Bedeutung jüdischer Kultur im Kontext fürstlicher Repräsentation genauso wie nach der Definition des Jüdischen. Schon in der Kunstkammer Albrechts V. gab es einen Tisch mit jüdischen Gerätschaften und auch die Hofbibliothek enthielt von Anfang an wertvolle hebräische Handschriften. Verfügbar waren diese Judaica durch die Judenvertreibung des Spätmittelalters geworden. Die dritte wittelsbachische Sammlung, das Bayerische Nationalmuseum, weist dagegen in eine Zeit, in der Juden in München leben durften und von den bayerischen Landgemeinden sowie aus Osteuropa in die Stadt zogen.
