Collecting Images [06]
Heinrich Thannhauser’s “Moderne Galerie”
The sixth exhibition in the “Collecting Images” series looks at Heinrich Thannhauser and the “Moderne Galerie,” which he established in 1909, and which went on to become the exhibition space in Munich for Modernist art until he moved to Berlin in 1928. The first “Blue Rider” exhibition, one-man shows for Cézanne, Degas, Gauguin, Picasso, Manet, Monet, Renoir, and van Gogh, as well as for established German painters and graphic artists and others discovered at that time, all contributed to the fame of the “Moderne Galerie.”

The exhibition, for which loans from a number of renowned international museums have been secured, also takes a closer look at the fate and fortune of the gallery founder and his son, Justin: Heinrich Thannhauser died in 1935 while preparations were still in progress for his emigration to Switzerland, and Justin, who had succeeded his father as director of the gallery, emigrated to the USA by way of Paris. In 1963, following the death of his two sons, Justin transferred ownership of those works in his private collection that he had been able to save from the hands of the Nazis, to the Guggenheim Museum, where the memory of the gallery, which had made such a decisive contribution to establishing Munich’s reputation as a center for the arts in the first third of the 20th century, continues to live on.
