Kurt Landauer wrote soccer history. Under his presidentship, FC Bayern won its first German football championship in 1932. As a Jew, he was forced to resign in 1933; in 1938 he was deported to Dachau. He later succeeded in fleeing to Switzerland. Four of his six siblings were murdered during the Shoah. However, after the war, he returned to Munich and to FC Bayern as well.
Little was previously known about Kurt Landauer’s private life. From 1927 onward he was in a relationship with Maria Baumann, the family’s housekeeper—a relationship that was kept secret for a long time. Despite the threat of denunciation as regards to the so-called Nuremberg Laws, she—as non-Jew—pursued the relationship, and even during Landauer’s emigration contact never broke off. From Switzerland he wrote a long letter to his lover, a story of his life, in which he describes their relationship and asks her to marry him.
Following extensive research in archives and in cooperation with descendants, this scholarly appraisal places the correspondence within the context of Munich’s Jewish history and culture. The publication is edited by Jutta Fleckenstein and Rachel Salamander, assisted by Lara Theobalt and Lilian Harlander.
To complement the publication of letters, the exhibition in the Study Area – “Spitzenhaus Rosa Klauber”—opened in March 2021. The Klauber-Klopfer family saved Kurt Landauer during his exile in Geneva.
