Places of Exile 03: Munich and Washington Heights

June 17, 2009 through August 30, 2009

The third exhibition in the series "Places of Exile" provides an insight into the New York neighbourhood of Washington Heights, which during the 1930s became a center of German Jewish Immigration. Here, immigrants from southern Germany, together with Rabbi Dr. Leo Baerwald, last rabbi of Munich's main synagogue destroyed in 1938, founded congregation "Beth Hillel".

The exhibition "Munich and Washington Heights" presents this New York immigrant neighbourhood and traces the history of the congregation and its members.
